Derby

 

The shire of Derby is situated in remote Western Australia, to the east of Broome.  Due to Donovan Payne’s specialised experience in dealing with remote communities and difficult rural builds, we were commissioned to design community swimming and waterplay facilities.  Remote builds pose unique challenges to Architects due to the lack of direct exposure to the site and its inhabitants.  Donovan Payne developed a comprehensive plan of site visits, phone contact and regular email contact to ensure that all stakeholders and client input was successfully incorporated into the brief.

 

Unlike the large Aquatic complexes of Ryde, NSW and Mandurah, WA; derby required a modest and appropriate facility that offered plenty of fun for different age groups while recognising tight budget constraints – every dollar of construction cost in Derby is almost twice what it would cost in Perth!  We were happy to oblige, and there was still plenty of room for waterplay elements and fun additions.  After creating a successful […]

Claremont

 

Claremont pool was a major pool refurbishment for the City of Claremont, consisting of a major re-sculpt, re-tile and upgrade to pool plant facilities.  The result was a serious transformation from an out-dated set of pools to a modern and vibrant standard.  The addition of shade structures around the pool have increase its functionality for the users.  At the time when the original Claremont pool was constructed, Australia saw pools as a place for exercise – swimming laps.  Over the evolution of pools in Australia we have gone from such a strict functionality to realising a much more dynamic relationship with pool users.

 

These days people swim laps, use spa features, play in waterplay zones, sunbathe, rehabilitate and even have barbecues on location.  Donovan Payne’s approach was to vastly increase the possibility of these other uses to maximise the potential of the pool.  The result is a modern facility ready for many decades to come.

Choa Chu Kang Singapore

 

Choa Chu Kang in Singapore is the home of the Warriors – Champions of Singapore’s national top-tier professional S-League.  The Singapore Sports Council commissioned Elton Roade Architects and Donovan Payne Architects to design a new Stadium and Aquatic Centre under their “Sports for all” campaign.  At the time, Singapore’s aquatic facilities were entirely focused on sporting and competition.  There were few aquatic leisure and community facilities within the country, and even these consisted of the standard lap pool designs.

Through strong communication and briefing with the Singaporean sports council, Donovan Payne delivered an entirely new model of aquatic facilities to Singapore, consisting of a wave pool, leisure pool facilities, lazy river, lap pool, and waterplay facilities.  In conjunction with the Stadium component, and community street food sections, the complex has successfully created a vibrant community complex that is many things to different groups: the home of the Singapore Warrriors, an open jogging facility for the strong Choa Chu Kang jogging […]

Burswood Atrium

 

The Burswood Entertainment Centre pool complex, kitchens, atrium and toilet amenities were a large set of jobs completed for BEC by Donovan Payne.  Key to the process was liaising with several heads of departments, and generating briefing requirements to incorporate the various needs of users.  The result has been a high-end set of facilities that have brought up the standard of the complex.

 

The facilities consist of an indoor pool and spa resort, sauna and spa facilities, disability access, outdoor leisure pool and water features, cafe and sun lounging facilities.  The bespoke elements of the design have created a complex unique to Burswood that has created additional client interest and value.

Pearl

 

The BEC Pearl Room Offices are a luxury set of offices at Burswood Entertainment Centre.  A high level of finish was required, with ample natural lighting and ventilation to create the best possible working environment.  Through a strong consultation process with the client, we narrowed down the brief to their exact requirements.  The result is a very high level of finish that is incomparable to a standard set of offices.  Combined with the environmentally sustainable design principles employed, the working atmosphere in these spaces is optomised to create a sense of lightness, atmospheric comfort, and natural acoustic levels.

Bayswater

 

Bayswater Waves was a cutting edge Aquatic complex completed for the Bayswater City Council.  The main focus of the centre was on bringing in new technologies to create a large and vibrant facility for the general community.  Front and centre in this design was the 25 metre x 25 metre wave pool and waterslide facilities, creating unique interest in the centre and differentiating it from other facilities.  Bayswater also includings a children’s pool, spa, sauna, steam room, 25 metre lap pool, and a heated program pool, servicing all elements of the community.

In addition to the emphasis on high-technology facilities, Donovan Payne focussed heavily on creating the best possible Environmentally Sustainable outcomes throughout the project.  This included state-of-the-art ozone filtration and de-humidification as well as passive solar design including building orientation, solar calculations, and natural ventilation.  The result was a comfortable, exciting, and welcoming space, with a lower operational cost and excellent community support.

Balga Aquatic Centre

 

Balga Aquatic Centre is both an Aquatic complex and community facility for the surrounding area.  Comprising of a creche, community meeting facilities, cafe space, and public art components, it has become much more than a standard set out pools.  Donovan Payne set out from the beginning of the project with a focus on communicating with community stakeholders to add additional value to the project.  The brief developed to include several multi-functional spaces to suit a variety of the community’s needs, and the early input from the community was key in the development of the best possible Architectural result.

 

Another important element of the facilities was providing ample disabled access throughout the complex.  The leisure pool’s “zero beach”, and the 25 metre pool’s disability ramp are key design elements in every Donovan Payne design, as well as special “Family and Disabled” changing, showering, and toilet facilities.  In addition to these features, Donovan Payne also designed Balga a fully accessible hydrotherapy pool […]

Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre

 

Donovan Payne Architects was awarded the architectural commission and presented with a concept design and costing which had been previously prepared by Thomson Marquis / Ian Howard and Prior Cheney Architects from Melbourne. It was very soon apparent that the plan produced did not satisfy the functional requirements and that the project had been severely under-costed.

Donovan Payne Architects worked with Council to redefine the project and produced a new functional design brief and costing.

Donovan Payne Architects provided full architectural, engineering and costing services and superintended the construction of the project that was completed, within budget in 2008.

Functional planning involved the successful integration of new indoor aquatic facilities with the existing sports centre and indoor pool.

Existing facilities included:

  • Refurbished the existing indoor 25m pool
  • Refurbished the existing pool concourse
  • Renovated and refurbished the existing timber structure, ceilings and spectator seating to the pool hall
  • Upgraded existing pool hydraulics, disinfection, chemical storage and delivery systems

Piara Waters Pavilion and Sports Precinct

After several years of design, negotiation and planning, Piara Waters pavilion is now under construction! The new urban development of Piara Waters in the City of Armadale, WA includes the provision of extensive playing fields and a multi-use sports pavilion.

St Hildas Anglican School for Girls

 

Donovan Payne Architects provided full architectural service from master planning through to contract administration.

Scope of Work

  • The new pool is 51.25 metre x 8 lanes, with a 1.25 metre wide boom.
  • This provides a 50 metre lap pool, two 25 metre lap pools, or a competition-sized water polo pool.
  • The pool has been designed as a full FINA compliant competition pool, with concourse-level overflow gutters along both sides of its 51.25 metre length. It is a fully tiled, formed concrete pool, using fit-for-purpose DIN standard rating commercial pool-grade ceramic tiles.
  • The project includes the following support facilities and amenities:
  • Change rooms with WC, shower, basin and lockers
  • Deck-side showers
  • Accessible facility
  • Entry/Office area
  • Spectator seating under windbreak-sun shelter

  • Pool storage
